Amercements, 1787-1805.

Lists of individuals required to pay amercements. An amercement has the nature of a monetary fine, but is not created by statute. Instead, it is imposed arbitrarily by a court for a fault or misconduct such as failure to turn over funds to the court or disobeying its summons. In Maryland, an amercement was a remedy against a sheriff for failing to perform a court-ordered duty. Entries name defendant, plaintiff, and person responsible to pay the amercement. Amounts given in pounds of tobacco.
